Sheffield United boss Slavisa Jokanovic says he plans to rotate his squad for tonight's Carabao Cup clash with Carlisle United.

The Blades' new manager intends to give opportunities to some of those who did not feature in their Championship opener.

Sheffield United got off to a losing start back in the second tier as they lost 1-0 to Birmingham at Bramall Lane.

Jokanovic, Chris Wilder's successor, says he is pleased to have another game so quickly and it will give him the chance to look at others in his first-team squad.

The Serbian manager said: "It's positive to have another game so soon. But it's 'Welcome to the Championship,' it's nothing new.

"I know what this competition is like and I prefer not to stop now. I wouldn't want an international break or something like this.

"It's a great chance for some people who didn't play against Birmingham and some of the people who did need to play more minutes. It's positive for us."

A Maxime Colin goal consigned Jokanovic to defeat on Saturday with the home side including the likes of England Euro 2020 squad member Aaron Ramsdale and ex-Carlisle loan midfielder Oli Norwood.

If they are among those rested tonight it could hand chances to players like Michael Verrips, Luke Freeman, Chris Basham and Jayden Bogle, all of whom were unused subs on Saturday.

Former Liverpool Rhian Brewster could also get a chance.

If Carlisle's Joe Riley is involved, meanwhile, it will see him take on the side for whom he made two loan appearances back in 2017 whilst on Manchester United's books.

It is United's first visit to Bramall Lane since March 2014, when a home side including future England duo Harry Maguire and Conor Coady, plus future Carlisle midfielder Stefan Scougall, won 1-0 in League One.

Carlisle are winless in their last six visits to Sheffield United, last winning there in March 1980, when goals from Mike McCartney and George McVitie earned a 2-0 victory in Division Three
