Cumbria police are appealing for help after more than 40 bales of hay have been slashed.
It is believed to have happened between 8pm on Monday and 8am on Tuesday.
The wrapping has been slashed at two different location but both belong to the same farmer.
Officers do not believe it is linked to the Appleby Horse Fair.
A spokesman for Cumbria police said: "More than 40 round bales have been slashed at two different locations a mile apart, the bales belong to the same farmer.
"This was in the area of Bolton/Crackenthorpe.
"There has also been damaged caused to a gate which had been opened.
"This is not believed to be linked with Appleby Fair.
"If you have seen anything suspicious or have any information please contact Police via 101 incident number - CP-20210817-0096"
