Last week Cumbria County Council showed their support from Merchant Navy Day.

The Red Ensign Flag was flown at Cumbria House in Carlisle and the Port of Workington as well as locations in South Cumbria.

The flags were flown on the 3rd September as this marked the outbreak of World War Two and the first major maritime casualty.

Chairman of Cumbria County Council, Councillor Tony Markley, said: “Merchant Navy Day is a great way to show our support for the servicemen and women who kept our ‘Island Nation’ afloat during both World Wars.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the whole nation to show its support and appreciation. Cumbria County Council is proud to be flying the flag.”

Merchant Navy vessel SS Athenia was torpedoed just a few hours after hostilities were declared.

The day later became enshrined as Merchant Navy Day to honour those who died in the world wars and highlight our country’s reliance on the work of the Merchant Navy.

The County Council is following on with the national support for the Seafarers UK and the Merchant Navy Association flag to be flown on public buildings and landmarks.

The Red Ensign flag was ceremonially raised at the Port of Workington on Friday by Councillor Tony Markley, and Cabinet Member and Armed Forces Portfolio Holder, Councillor Celia Tibble.

Mrs Tibble added: “I am delighted that we are supporting Merchant Navy Day again and have been able to fly the flag.”
