A RIDING school based just north of Carlisle has been given a five-star rating in its most recent license assessment.
Lads Lodge, a small, family-owned stables at Penton, was awarded top marks in the recent council assessment which monitors its standards.
A fairly new business, it only opened in April 2019. Sabine Bliss from the stables said: "When we opened, we got told we had 5 stars, but then got a message saying they could only give us a 4-star rating as we are new. So we were happy to have been rewarded 5 stars this time.
"We choose to do what we do because we care."
All businesses which hire out horses for riding or instruction must hold a licence, according to the council.
Guidance from Defra says that: "Each business issued with a licence will be awarded a star rating, which must be displayed. The star rating will range from 1 star (meeting minimum standards) to 5 stars (meeting higher standards) and will be based on compliance with statutory conditions and standards."
Sabine added: "I like to think we are a bit special. Our clients are amazing and our horses are super well looked after."
One thing that sets the stables apart is that they teach equestrian vaulting - gymnastics on horseback.
The stables is currently in the process of becoming an RDA group (riding and vaulting for disabled), and Sabine added it will be seeking funds to put up a school room and get a hoist to help children with disabilities get on and off the horses.
