The 2022 Guinness World Records were announced today, and there is no shortage of weird and wonderful records being achieved.
From the woman who can skip using her hair, to the fastest dog and cat on a scooter, the variety of record breakers is huge. Environmental champions, pop culture icons and sporting heroes all feature in this year’s records.
Throughout the years Cumbria has featured many a record breaker in the Guinness World Records, from normal achievement to those downright strange. We’ve put together a trip down memory lane for the 3 most unusual records broken across Cumbria.
Carlisle: Longest line of pom-poms
In 2016, Eden Valley Hospice achieved the record for longest line of pom-poms, with 29,312.
The hospice was celebrating 25 years of care and marked the occasion with a record attempt that involved the whole community.
Ulverston: Largest shaving cream pie fight
In 2016 Another Fine Fest Ulverston achieved the title of largest shaving cream fight. On 18 June 2016 1180 participants met at the annual arts and theatre festival to celebrate the town of Ulverston and Stan Laurel, of Laurel and Hardy fame, who was born there.
The resulting shaving cream pie fight led to a Guinness World Record for Ulverston.
Egremont: Most Gurning World Championships wins (male)
Tommy Mattison is the only male gurner to win his title 14 times. Mattinson first won at the annual Gurning World Championship at Egremont Crab Fair in Cumbria in 1986–87 and then 12 more times between 1999 and 2012.
Lowther Deer Park: Largest gathering of people dressed as Superman
In 2013, 867 people gathered at Escapade at Kendall Calling Festival all dressed as Superman.
Escapade was attempting the record to coincide with the launch of the Man of Steel film and to help raise awareness for the "Help for Heroes" charity.
