A STUDY has found that Carlisle is the allotment capital of the UK.
Research carried out by Barratt Homes found that Carlisle has the most allotments per 100,000 people in the UK.
The study looked into the amount of allotments across the UK and also looked into how the nation has been researching allotments online.
Searches for allotments have increased by 81 percent between 2019 and 2021.
Carlisle has 61 allotments per 100,000 people.
The statistics take the area around the city into account. It gives the population of Carlisle as 107,000, and there are 66 allotments in the area.
The average allotment size is 3,800 metres squared and the total area of allotments in Carlisle stands at 253,000 metres squared.
The next top cities for allotments are Wakefield, Winchester, Chelmsford and Sunderland.
The average size of allotment in Carlisle is much lower than the rest of the top 10.
Carlisle is sixth in the list of UK cities searching online for allotments, with 23 per 1,000 people.
This has gone down 11 per cent since 2019. The city with the most searches per 1,000 people was Norwich, followed by Cambridge, Worcester, Exeter and Oxford.
