A CARLISLE community centre is re-launching a recurring event to provide support to the community.

Soup at Sandsfield starts again at Yewdale Community Centre on Tuesday, 5 October.

The soup lunch is aimed at bringing the community together for food and a chat.

It will take place on the first Tuesday of every month at 12:30pm at costs £3.50 to attend.

This is the first time that it has taken place since the pandemic.

Steve Carter, manager at the Yewdale Community Centre, said: "It was a really good social event. The idea was to bring the community together a little bit.

"There was a really good mix of people who used to attend. There were people who were on their own and were a bit socially isolated."

The lunch started five years ago and was run as an initiative through St Barnabas and the Holy Trinity Church which used to do a service at the centre on a Sunday morning.

Now that the church has changed venue, staff and volunteers at the centre have taken over.

Steve said: "I actually think there’ll be more of a demand for it. I think people are desperate to get back to some kind of normality. I think people will appreciate being able to socialise safely.

"Everybody within the community is welcome. It’s people that might feel socially isolated, people who maybe struggle with nutritious food, they can come along and we can encourage them to eat more healthily."

The community centre has become a lot more important to the area since the closure of The Reiver pub nearby.

Carlisle City Councillor James Bainbridge, who represents Yewdale & Morton West, said: I am delighted that Soup at Sandsfield is restarting.

"It has always been a popular event at bringing people together and providing a nice lunch with a chance to have a chat.

"Over the last 18 months I am sure it will have been a miss to the people that have previously attended."

This is only one of many events happening at Yewdale Community Centre in the coming months.

They are also launching a community cafe, Yewdale Snack Shack, next week.

It will take place on Mondays and Fridays between 8am and 11am.
