THE HORRIFIC murder of Ryan Kirkpatrick has left palpable shock in Carlisle city centre.

Early yesterday afternoon, despite the bright sunshine, the area around Carlyle's Court where the 24-year-old was fatally stabbed on Saturday night was eerily quiet.

Mr Kirkpatrick - who was about to celebrate his 25th birthday - died in what detectives say was a "targeted attack."

The tragedy prompted an outpouring of sympathy, much of it expressed on social media. Since the tragedy, scores of people have visited Carlyle's Court to pay their respects.

Laid carefully near the scene is a carpet of floral tributes, a poignant reminder of a life needlessly wasted.

Attached to one tribute was a birthday card. "It's just shocking," said Keith Tattersall, 34, a businessman who works nearby.

"While working here, we've seen a lot of his family and close friends and it's obviously incredibly difficult for them. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

"Over the past two days, as they've visited the scene, we've seen a lot of raw emotions coming out."

Asked about the general reaction in the area, Mr Tattersall added: "It's disbelief that this happened in our city."

Many of those visiting the site never knew Mr Kirkpatrick. They included Alisia Bell and 19-year-old Ben Pooley. "It's awful," said Alisia. "Really shocking." Ben added:"It's the kind of thing you expect in a place like London, not Carlisle."

Police continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward.
