As we remember this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games, we have been looking back in to our archives at photos of Carlisle’s very own swimming Olympian.
Carlisle’s Wendy Burrell was born in 1952 and competed in three events at the 1968 summer Olympics in Mexico, coming sixth in the medley relay and topping the best European speed in the women’s 200 metres backstroke.
Crowds greeted her on her arrival back home and a perpetual challenge cup, named after 16-year-old Wendy, was presented by the "Evening News and Star" for open competition each year.
Another photo shows Wendy opening the Silloth Lido pool in 1969. Do you have memories of Carlisle’s swimming sensation? Let us know.
