A local MP has given his backing on a new initiative that's encouraging more people to visit the areas many attractions.
MP for Allerdale Mark Jenkinson believes that Cumbria Resident's Week will be a good boost for our area.
It is hoped that the plan will encourage more local people to use the attractions and businesses around them.
Mr Jenkinson said: "It's an amazing thing to get behind to support local businesses.
"I've just been shopping in Cockermouth and visited the Lakes Creamery in Aspatria so I do my bit for local businesses where I can.
It's a way of rewarding them through their work.
"We need these businesses and local producers to go from strength to strength."
Mark explained that there are lots of businesses and attractions across Allerdale that offer people something special.
At the top of Allerdale there is the often forgotten Bowness on Solway, a historic town where Hadrian's Wall begins.
Cockermouth also proves very popular with tourists and Workington is a main shopping destination.
The coast at Maryport also offers visitors a scenic view with special attractions like the aquarium.
Mr Jenkinson added: "There is a lot to do across my constituency and this will help a lot of us realise what's on our doorstep."
Cumbria Residents’ Week will take place from Saturday October 2 to October 10, 2021, with more than 75 local businesses signed up to the scheme.
Residents who choose to visit participating businesses can be entered into a draw to win fantastic prizes.
The initiative has been put together through a partnership of Allerdale Borough Council and the five other districts.
Cumbria Tourism and Keswick Tourism have also supported this.
It is hoped that it will help to bring businesses back following the Covid 19 pandemic.
Councillor Tony Markley, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive member for leisure and tourism, said: "Residents’ Week promises to be a great initiative which I’m sure will give Cumbria’s visitor economy a welcome boost now the traditional tourist season is winding down."
