A LOCAL cycling group hosted a successful event at the weekend.
Carlislc Community Cycling Hub held its Super Saturday event at Hammond's Pond.
The event had several different elements, with a family and social bike ride and a pump track for youngsters.
There were also mini trampolines provided by I Can Fitness and there was a stall for people to get their bikes serviced and fixed.
Lance Greenhalgh, Carlisle Community Cycle Hub Secretary, said: "It went extremely well, it was much better than we anticipated in many ways.
"The cycle ride was very well attended. We had people who had disabilities, people who had families.
"There was a little child even on the scooter and they managed to complete the whole course of just over four miles.
"We got back in twice the time we expected it to take but that didn’t matter."
The event aimed to encourage people to take up cycling.
Carlisle has 37 cycle routes and Cumbria County Council are due to start a public consultation at the end of the month to gain a public perspective on the option for new cycle ways.
Councillor Pam Birks, Mayor of Carlisle, attended the event.
She said: "It was fabulous. I had a go on an electric bike, which was a bit discombobulating because I’ve never been on one before.
"It threw me slightly. Promoting the cycle routes that we have in and around Carlisle is fabulous. We’re trying to make the place better and show people what enjoyment they can have.
"It was all really good fun and well attended."
Cllr Birks said that she hopes the event will encourage some people to cycle to work.
"We need to be thinking about things like that with climate change," she said.
"There were people there that do a cycle ride of 30 miles every day. We can't all do that, but if we all make small changes we’re all contributing to clearing carbon from the climate."
Mr Greenhalgh said that some of the features of the fun day, like the pump track at Hammond's Pond, should be available in the future.
He added: "We’re hoping that it will be resurfaced with tarmac which will make it safer and much more fun."
Over winter, Carlisle Community Cycle Hub's Denton Street workshop is available for drop-ins on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
