A local up and coming comedian has been entertaining audiences with her one woman show.

Hannah Sowerby, aged 25, has been performing in Newcastle, with her comedy show about life in Penrith.

She is both the writer and performer of the hilarious 80 minute show titled ‘10 Things To Do In A Small Cumbrian Town’ which is being performed until December 11.

Hannah is originally from Appleby-in-Westmorland and now has her home in Penrith, and is a proud Cumbrian who wants to show the beautiful and honest reality of living in Cumbria - and that it isn’t all hiking, lakes and kayaking.

She has so far had lots of excellent reviews, including from The Guardian, who compared her to a young Victoria Wood, her comedy idol.

Speaking more on her career, and how it has led up to this moment, Hannah Sowerby said: "It is my first time doing a one woman show, before, I used to do double acts and I am also a playwright, but this is my first proper council funded show, I have come a long way to get to this point.

"I wrote my first play when I was 16 which I put on at the Penrith Playhouse.

"I call Penrith my home but I am actually from Appleby.

"I then studied in Newcastle, and since then it was just about having lots of different kinds of jobs, picking up the ones that I could."

After being asked how her comedy show would compare to other comedic styles, particularly her idol Victoria Wood, she said: "It's like Sarah Milican mixed with Victoria wood, but its not comedy all the way through,

"It's just a great night out.

"The show is pay what you feel, just so it's accessible."

Starting her run on Tuesday, November 23, she said she is roughly halfway through her run now, but there are plenty of shows still to be performed at Alphabetti Theatre, a venue in Newcastle.
