Charging points for electric cars have been destroyed.

The electric car charging points, which were in Brampton, have been destroyed after a car crashed into them.

A spokesperson from Cumbria police said: "Police were called at 9:53pm on the 26th December, to the report of a vehicle road traffic collision.

"The incident involved an Audi A5 and a Peugeot, which was unoccupied and static during the incident.

"A number of electrical charging points were reported as damaged during the collision.

"A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being over the legal prescribed limit for alcohol.

"He has been released under investigation.

"There were no reported injuries."

Reacting to the news, Mike Mitchelson, Brampton and Fellside councillor for Carlisle City Council said: "It is horrendous to see that a car has run into and destroyed the charging points.

"It's bad enough doing that, but it could have had some more horrendous consequences had there been people around at the time, it was lucky that there was nobody there, you have to be thankful that no people have been hit."

"Obviously well need to see [the charging points] being fixed

"In areas like that, people have got to take care."
