A survey released showed more young people had turned to second hand clothing stores for their Christmas party outfits.
The YouGov survey, administered by University of Hull, has indicated that 25 per cent of 18-24 year olds have bought second hand clothing this year for their party outfits.
58 per cent also said they would be likely to in coming years, with the main reasoning being it's eco-friendly and sustainable.
One local Penrith charity shop volunteer said: "This is something we have noticed and it's great to see more and more young people coming in.
"What it means is we get more younger clothes coming in as well, and when they see something they like once, they often come back in."
The volunteer said it's great to get different opinions as well and they can add a "lot of fun" to the store.
However, a Workington charity shop volunteer said she hadn't noticed an uptake in a younger clientele this year.
The University of Manchester reported that the fast fashion industry brings with it over 92 million tonnes of waste produced per year, with urgent calls being made for a reshaping of the fashion business model.
