LOCAL animal shelter, Oak Tree Animals’ Charity, are putting Carlisle residents to the test with their ‘Run For Rescue’ scheme, which aims to raise funds to go towards food and vet bills for their stray and sick animals.
The fundraiser runs throughout the month of January, and people can join at any time throughout the month.
There are different ways locals are completing the 26.2 mile distance, from cycling to swimming to new mums pushing their prams in an effort to raise money.
There is no age restrictions at all, with the oldest participant being 80 years old.
Communications Officer for the shelter, Lorna De Mello, said: "So far over 60 people in the community have joined in with the scheme, which you can cover just over a mile a day to complete.
"Those wanting to participate will pay a £15 joining fee and will receive a medal when you’ve completed, people are also encouraged to bring their own animals along."
The shelter on average takes in over 400 animals a year, and relies mostly upon donations to feed and see to their medical needs. It costs £25 a day to keep their community vans on the road, who patrol for stray or sick animals that are in need of help, and cases unfortunately spike over the Christmas period.
Oak Tree Animals’ Charity said: “We are so grateful to the 68 people who have signed up and counting. All profits raised go towards animals in need here at Oak Tree and around the community.
"Our aim is to keep our animals happy and healthy and also find them their forever home, like seven year old Bulldog, Dougie, who has been in the centre for the longest time.
"Just one donation ensures that Dougie can have treatment from parasites and stay healthy. We home to find his forever home soon."
