Carlisle City Council have announced their events schedule for 2022 with a major celebration taking place for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

An additional £30,000 has been set aside in Carlisle City Council’s budget to support the celebrations.

There will be a big event held in Bitts Park on Sunday June 5 after the funding was decided at the Carlisle Council meeting this week.

Stephen Higgs, Portfolio holder for Culture, Heritage and Leisure, said: "We’re delighted to confirm the dates for our packed programme of Carlisle events. More details on all the events will be announced and we recommend keeping a close eye on our Discover Carlisle website for updates.

"Coronavirus has impacted on our programme of events over the last few years but now that restrictions have been eased, we can put in place plans for the upcoming year. Carlisle is renowned for hosting high quality events and we look forward to welcoming our local communities and visitors to the city’s events in 2022."

The first event to take place will be the Easter International Markets in the city centre between Thursday 14 and Monday 18 of April.

Bitts Park will be the centre of lots of attention in 2022 as massive national acts will be coming to perform this summer.

Pop star Paloma Faith will be doing a concert in the park on Saturday 23 July and on Sunday 24 July Tom Jones will be performing.

The city's popular Fireshow will be returning on bonfire night after it has had to be cancelled the past couple of years due to the Covid pandemic.

Other popular attractions like the Christmas Lights Switch On in the City Centre are set to return on Sunday November 20.

Both of these events have proved popular with residents and families so their return will be much anticipated by the community.

Carlisle Cathedral, Tullie House and Carlisle Castle will be taking part in the City of Lights event in October. To make it extra special this year, it will be linked to the Hadrian's Wall 1900 Festival. An event that is celebrating the 1900th anniversary of the historic Roman site near Carlisle.
