NUMEROUS public benches in Carlisle City Centre have been pulled out of the ground by vandals.

The 'mindless' act of vandalism took place on English Street last night.

The damage has put several public benches out of action until they can be fixed again.

A spokesperson from Carlisle City Council said: "We are aware that several benches within the city centre have been vandalised and we urge anyone with any information to contact Cumbria Police.

"The criminal damage will result in the benches being out of use until repairs are made," they said.

A spokesperson from Cumbria Police said: "Police are aware of criminal damage caused overnight to a number of benches in Carlisle city centre, in the English Street area.

"Such mindless vandalism benefits nobody and ultimately repairs must be paid for by the public via the council."

The vandalism follows a number of police callouts about anti-social behaviour in the area. Mayor of Carlisle Pam Birks said yesterday: "Enough is enough."

She added: "In the city centre, we just feel as if there are gangs of youths who just think they can do what they want."

The police spokesperson added: "Police would encourage anyone with information relating to this incident to report online at cumbria.police.uk/reportit , quoting incident number 96 of February 16 2022.

"You can also phone on 101," they said.

"Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."
