Workington Reds will celebrate their centenary year with a dinner next month.
The dinner will take place at the town’s Washington Central Hotel on Friday, March 18. The two-course meal will also see former players who have donned a Reds shirt turn up to share their favourite moments at the club.
Discussing the event, chairman Dave Bowden said: “It’s part of a whole raft of things we have organised as part of the club’s centenary year.
"We started with the football tournaments where we had a lot of kids take part in last summer. We also have our centenary junior season tickets which eventually will be rolled out to 5-6,000 children of the town to come and watch the club. We started with the younger end and decided to it would be nice to celebrate 100 years with a dinner.
“Now it’s time to look back from 1921 to 2021 the key events of the club’s history.
"We’ll invite some of the old players who are still around. We have fans who remember when the side played Manchester United and Chelsea and we hope to have a presentation showcasing the best memories of the Reds.”
When asked what his favourite moments as a Reds fan were, Dave answered: “My early memories as a young boy were catching the bus on Friday nights from the village we stayed at. We won 5-1 away to Blackburn, who were a first division club with England internationals, we also drew 2-2 with Chelsea. No one liked coming up here and we were a team that was feared.
“My dad used to let me stay up to wait for the football results to appear on the TV at 10.30pm – they were incredible days.”
During the weekend, the current league leaders will face bottom side Trafford.
Dave continued: “For us, it doesn’t matter who we play now. It’s so tight at the top of the table and I’ll borrow an old phrase, but we’re treating every game like a cup final. It doesn’t matter who we play, games are going to be very exciting. It’s all about getting as many points as we can in the final 10 games of the season to see if we can end the season as champions.”
Tickets for the evening cost £30, with full tables costing £300. Places can be booked by contacting commercial@workingtonafc.co.uk or by calling 01900 602871.
