AFTER a hard day’s graft, the thought of having to prepare a meal may be quite daunting.
With companies like Just Eat and Foodhub releasing apps for mobile phones, nowadays it is even easier to order a takeaway.
The chip shop remains a takeaway heavyweight, with over 250 million fish and chip meals sold each year in the UK.
The News and Star asked its readers who they think are the 10 best chippies in the Carlisle area. In no particular order, readers chose:
- The Fryery – The family-run chippy has kept Carlisle bellies filled since 1980 and with three locations in the city, it is one of the most popular choices for a supper.
- Morton Fryer – Found at Stonegarth, the takeaway is open six days a week and offers a range of lunch time and teatime deals.
- Fontanas – The London Road business continues to welcome visitors from further afield, who make a pit stop in Carlisle on their journeys to and from Scotland.
- Dalston Fryer – Located at The Square, the management at the Dalston Fryer are celebrating their sixth anniversary in charge and are praised for the variety of options on the menu.
- Little Chippy – As well as offering tasty fish and chips, the Botchergate chippy also sells Southern fried chicken for those who fancy a meaty feast for their dinner.
6. Fantails – Hidden in a 1600s blacksmith’s workshop, the restaurant has been open for over 25 years and has developed an enviable reputation as a unique restaurant to spoil your loved ones.
7. Drovers Rest – The Monkhill restaurant works closely with local companies to ensure that customers are treated with the best possible ingredients in the area.
8. Central Chippy – Owned by Pam Wood, who has 32 years’ experience, the Central Avenue chippy continues to offer delicious meals at affordable prices.
9. Paolo’s – Found on Denton Street, the chip shop offers chip shop favourites, curries, rotisserie chicken and, for Easter, battered Creme Eggs!
10. Sunny Fish and Chicken Bar – Technically a Chinese takeaway, the Ridley Road establishment is still praised for its mouth-watering batter and delicious chips.
