A VIGIL has been held to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine and give locals a sense of hope.
The event, organised by Councillor Michael Eldon and the Reverend Nicki Pennington, took place in Cleator Moor on Sunday.
It was attended by more than 200 people, who wanted to show their support for Ukrainians who are currently being forced to flee violence caused by Russia's invasion.
Cllr Eldon, who represents Cleator Moor South on the town council, said he came up with the idea on Thursday and messaged the Rev Nicki Pennington about holding a peace vigil.
The community then pulled together to make the event happen.
Cllr Eldon said: "It went from an idea I had to contact Nicki, in two and a half days, to a service on Sunday, which was absolutely brilliant. Everything fell into place.
"It came together that quickly but it ran so smoothly. It sent the message of the community coming together again.
"We wanted to show that we care.
"I looked round and I couldn't believe how many people were there. I think people wanted to show solidarity with people in Ukraine, who are going through these terrible atrocities.
"I think it gave some people a sense of hope. We might only be a small town and community in Cleator Moor but we are one of the best communities I have ever seen.
"It was a message that we will help."
Cleator Moor resident Nina Albertelli wrote a poem which was read out by Thomas Butler, and Cleator Moor Brass Band learned the Ukrainian national anthem, which they played on the night.
Local primary schools and the Phoenix Youth Project got involved, as did the town's churches, which provided an order of service and prayers. David Farrell from the Royal British Legion also gave a speech.
Sian Price painted a dove with the word 'peace' in hundreds of different languages above it. People were invited to leave a thumbprint on the dove's wings.
There was a two-minute silence and people were invited to light candles on the floor. Cleator Moor Town Council provided electricity for the sound system.
Cllr Eldon thanked The Phoenix Youth Project, Cleator Moor Town Council, Cleator Moor Brass Band, Father Paul from St Mary's, the Rev Nicki Pennington and the people of Cleator Moor for turning out to show solidarity.
