A celebration of the Romans, abandoned in 2020 by lockdown, is back on.

Maryport’s Senhouse Roman Museum will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a three-day conference held in the Wave Centre.

Among the guest speakers will be Professor Ian Haynes and Tony Wilmott, the archaeologists who ran two digs on the Roman encampment next to the museum, found a new alter and discovered a hitherto unknown story about the Roman army in Maryport.

They will be talking on their findings, some of which has still not been told in Maryport.

Some of the country’s finest experts on Roman Briton will speak, not just bout Maryport but the entire Cumbrian  West Coast from.

 Launched  on Friday evening, April 22,  with a keynote lecture by Professor Rebecca Jones of Historic Environment Scotland, the weekend includes lectures covering projects in West Cumbria from Beckfoot to Ravenglass.

Other notables include the guest of honour, Professor David breeze, OBE, former trustee and chairman of the Senhouse Trust.

The museum itself will be open and free to enjoy that weekend.

 The conference, as well as celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Senhouse Museum, which boats the largest collection of single-site altars in Britain but is also one of many events celebrating the 1,900th anniversary of the building of Hadrian’s Wall, Events are planed along the length of the wall this year.
