ULLSWATER Community College has taken part in a national reading competition this week.

Three teams from UCC, made up by 11 students from Year 7-9, took part in the North West National Reading Champions quiz.

Dr Neil Hudson, MP for Penrith and Borders, said: "I am delighted that Ullswater Community College are taking part in the regional heats of The National Reading Champions Quiz.

"This quiz is a great initiative from the Literacy Trust and the Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society (ALCS) to bring schools together and build a love of reading in students," he said.

Following the success of the event, a spokesperson from UCC said: "It was a great morning with lots of cheering, dancing, deliberating and smiling.

"They all did superbly, but one team did really well and won," they said.

Emma, Lilia, Will and Erin scooped the glory, winning a £20 book token each, as well as bringing back a trophy for the school cabinet.

The group will now be heading towards the grand final in London as of May.

In a similar fashion, the school also celebrated World Poetry Day today with a visit from poet Dave Cryer from the Wordsworth Trust.

This is no new feat for the school, as last month acclaimed poet Matt Goodfellow visited over 250 students from the school, to discuss 'rebel writing poetry'.

At the time, Matt said: "I know exactly what the school curriculum is like in this country, so poetry offers a change in terms of a free space which allows kids the opportunity to talk about themselves in their own voice, using their natural dialect, allowing them to be proud of their own cultural heritage."
