Teenage Carlisle boxing star John-Joe Carrigan will go for glory in the England National Junior Championships this weekend.

The 14-year-old from Border City Amateur Boxing Club travels to Guildford in Surrey to fight for the 75kg title.

Carrigan has been drawn against Bailey Giles from Pej ABC Margate in the semi-finals. Victory would secure a place in Sunday’s final.

The talented young fighter has been helped in his preparation by Border City ABC’s national superheavyweight champion Ike Ogbo.

It is the latest shot at success for a promising boxer who has already picked up a number of junior titles.

Coach Ian Archibald from Border City ABC said: “Preparation has gone well, with a good win for John-Joe at our recent home show, where he out-pointed Scotland champion Rommel Marks.

“Club mate and national champion Ike Ogbo has been helping out with some top sparring for him.

“Although only 14 years old he has picked up three north west titles, two national titles and recently picked up gold in the MTK Box Cup held in Penrith.

“John-Joe is an exceptional boxer, and to achieve what he has so far is a credit to himself and Border City – all the hard work he’s putting in is paying off.

“Hopefully come Sunday he’ll be crowned junior champion. Everyone at the club will be cheering for him on Saturday, with the fight live to watch on YouTube.”

The national junior championships are open to boxers aged 14 to 16, and have produced future stars in past years such as David Haye, Amir Khan, Anthony Ogogo, Caroline Dubois, Sandy Ryan and Georgia O’Connor.
