'OVERWHELMING support' has been shown for the proposals on the improvement for Carlisle Railway station - in feedback gathered from the public.
As part of the development of the project, project partners held a third round of public consultation between Wednesday, September 22 and Wednesday, November 3 2021.
This included public events at Carlisle Railway Station and the Lanes Shopping Centre.
The public were presented with initial designs for improvement over the four areas listed below with the opportunity to provide their thoughts and opinions on the scheme:
• Court Square - Partial pedestrianisation of Court Square and improved pedestrian connections to and from the station.
• Station Interior - Enhancements to the Court Square access, improved facilities for customers and an upgraded and welcoming entrance from George Square.
• George Square (station entrance from James Street) - Public car parking being relocated to George Square to reduce the vehicular traffic at Court Square together with drop-off and bus replacement services.
• Sustainable Transport and Junction Improvements - A focus on improving pedestrian and cycle connectivity.
In total, 248 questionnaire responses were received.
Overall, the public reacted positively towards the pedestrianisation of Court Square, improved cycle provision, more pedestrian friendly areas at George Square and increased car parking facilities.
All comments have been recorded and will be used to advise the future direction of the Carlisle Railway Station project.
Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport said: “Thank you to everyone who took the time to look at the proposals and respond to the consultation.
"It’s with the public’s input that together we can make the scheme the best it can be.
"I’m pleased that so many people support the plans and gave us some really great feedback and suggestions.
"Carlisle Railway Station accommodates more than two million passengers every year and acts as a major interchange for the entire Borderlands region.
"I’m looking forward to seeing how the project takes shape over the coming months.”
Cllr John Mallinson, leader of Carlisle City Council added: “I’d like to pass on my thanks to everyone that took time to respond to the consultation. Public engagement is key to the scheme’s success and yet again, the development plans have received positive feedback.
“I look forward to seeing the project move on to the next stage and provide lasting benefits for Carlisle and the wider Borderlands region.”
