A TREE has been planted in Carlisle to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, with a focus on a sustainable future.
The Lord Lieutenant, Claire Hensman, helped plant a new cherry tree on the grounds of the city’s Bitts Park on Friday, March 25 for Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in support of the Queen’s Green Canopy.
Speaking after the tree was planted, Ms Hensman said: “If we can use the Queen’s Green Canopy as a method of engaging young people with how important sustainability is. This tree is young and will be around for a number of years and we are optimistic for a brighter future.”
Greener Every Day, a local environmental charity, coordinated the event.
They are a charity that plants native trees to:
fight climate change;
offset carbon emissions;
improve levels of biodiversity;
fight woodland disease;
improve people’s wellbeing and build natural flood defences.
Cez Flak, managing trustee of Greener Every Day, is hoping to reach out to local farmers and landowners who would allow their land to be used to help plant trees in the area.
Greener Every Day are looking to local businesses to help lower their carbon offset and were joined on Friday afternoon by representatives of Penrith Building Society, who have arranged a partnership with the charity.
For every new Penrith Building Society mortgage, the company will arrange to plant an oak tree.
By planting one oak tree we can offset an output of approximately 0.17 of a ton of carbon emissions per year. A representative for the company told the News and Star that they will also be ensuring that they will be working towards a more sustainable way of everyday working.
