Police are investigating a serious assault which took place in Workington in the early hours of yesterday morning (March,28). 

The injured man was found by passers-by in a back lane off Milburn Street, Workington at 1:21am. 

The ambulance service attended the scene with the victim being taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries, of which he remains in hospital in a 'critical condition'.

A spokesperson from Cumbria Constabulary said: "Investigations were immediately launched following the report of the discovery of the man.

"As a result, two people were swiftly arrested – a man, 46, and a woman, 39, both of Workington.

"They were both arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. They remain in custody today

"Further to this, detectives confirm that today a man, 34, was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and a man, 51, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender - both remain in custody. 

"Enquiries continue and detectives are appealing for anyone with information or who may have heard or seen any altercation or disturbance in the area to come forward.
