Scrolling through houses on Rightmove is a great pass time. From lusting over mansions to county estates and beach getaways to a cabin in the woods, there’s a dream home out there for every personality.
Whether you’re planning on buying or not, having a nosey at the houses is good fun.
And if you are looking to buy and have just short of £5 million to spend, this 14 bedroom house in Cumbria could be the one for you.
It is currently the most expensive property for sale in Cumbria on Rightmove, so take a look inside…
It is situated in Clappersgate near Ambleside and even has its own private fishing on the River Brathay.
It was previously run as a B&B but is now a large family home with stunning views and period features.
Named ‘Nanny Brow’, it was built in 1903 by the architect Francis Whitwell, who having committed his idea for his perfect house in a painting, then chose the site at Clappersgate on which to build his family home.
The family were friends of writer and illustrator Beatrix Potter and regularly met with her on Loughrigg Fell.
The property was showcased in the book “The Arts and Craft Houses of The Lake District” and named as one of the significant properties in The Lake District for the successful bid for UNESCO World Heritage Status in 2017.
The interior has been perfectly restored by the current owners to enhance and preserve the period features such as oak floors and panelling, leaded windows and carved oak fireplaces
The plasterwork ceiling friezes in the main reception room depict large flowers and plants, typical of the period, with an unusual additional frieze of small birds, frogs, rabbits and snails. This is unusual for an Arts and Crafts house.
In the 1980s a large extension was added which the current owners have made use of to run an exclusive B&B.
The house sits high above the Brathay Valley with the front facing South West with westerly views down the valley looking towards the head of the Langdales, with Wrynose Pass in the far distance.
One side of the house faces towards Brathay Church and in the direction of Lake Windermere, while the other side faces down into the gardens and over to Ivy Crag. The crag that the house sits on is called Nanny Brow, hence the name of the property.
The main entrance hall, reception room and dining room all highlight the history and style of this period and have breath-taking views overlooking the Brathay Valley.
The large dining room gives access to the kitchen with commercial grade stainless steel fittings, which could be repurposed with domestic fittings.
All the bedrooms have been renovated, with en-suite shower or bathrooms in each.
Nanny Brow is approached via a private driveway, leading to a large parking area at the front and the side of the property.
The surrounding gardens consist of a lawned area surrounded by planting of mature trees and shrubs, a stream, and mixed woodland. The land surrounding the house all belongs to The National Trust, and Nanny Brow has a private gate from the grounds to directly access this.
The property is listed with a guide price of £4,950,000.
