If you have ever thought that Carlisle people look extraordinarily fit there is a reason for it.
The city has been rated in the top five in the UK for gyms.
At fourth place, it is beaten by Manchester, Bristol and Norwich but it ranked higher than Oxford, Southampton and Glasgow.
A study by fitness experts BarBend analysed the locations of seven of the UK’s most popular gym brands such as PureGym, The Gym Group and Nuffield Health to see which of 53 major UK cities had the highest number of gyms per 100,000 people.
Carlisle comes in fourth, with 4.034 gyms per 100,000 people.
It is the smallest city with the smallest population surveyed and has three gyms for a population of 74,366.
Liverpool, which was ranked 10th has 18 gyms for a population of 496,784 equating to 3.6 per capita.
