A CHARITY group, set up to provide vegetables to a local foodbank, are appealing for volunteers as they take place in a national event.
The Denton Holme Community Garden are set to take part in this year’s Good to Grow Day, a national weekend of action from Friday, April 22 to Monday, April 25 for edible gardens to celebrate and prepare for the new growing season, promote their activities and encourage people to volunteer.
Discussing the group, Colin May said: “We’re a group that grows food for the Cornerstone foodbank.
"It is run entirely by volunteers who are trying to supply those who use the foodbank with healthy vegetables that are grown locally.
"We are hoping to extend so we can grow food for the pensioners’ lunch at the community centre. It’s been set up to help others in the community.

“The group was set up during the first lockdown and, of course, a lot of work has been delayed as we couldn’t get volunteers to help with the allotment.
"This year we’ve had help from the Co-op Community Fund, meaning that we have some funding to do stuff.
"We did the event last year and we hope that this year we can encourage people to get out and grow food locally in community spaces.”
When asked what guests will experience from the event, Colin continued: “We’d like to see people in their gardens and to get digging to plant some food. We’d also like to welcome people to the community garden to volunteer with a few jobs.
"For example, we’ve recently had some supplies for a shed donated so we’d like to start building it during the day as well as prepping more of the garden and getting vegetables in the ground to get growing.
“We’re going to make sure there’s food and drink for people to socialise, that’s a big part of the group. Making sure that people are getting outside and meeting new people.
"Last year we had around 20 people show up which was good, and I’d like to see a similar number this year.”
