THE FORMER Eclipse Leisure Centre in Workington could be altered to serve as a warehouse for a manufacturer of eco-products.

The Maryport-based draught excluder manufacturer Chimney Sheep could be based in Unit 4, Derwent Howe if a planning application is approved by Allerdale Borough Council.

Chimney Sheep Limited is the new owner of the unit which previously hosted Eclipse Bowling.

Alterations proposed by the business are the change of use from leisure to the building’s former use for warehousing and distribution.

General upgrading of the building fabric, the installation of solar panels, a boundary fence and storage containers are also proposed.

Supporting statements prepared for the council read: “The application seeks permission to alter the external appearance by over-cladding the existing structure with new profiled sheet insulated panels. This is to encapsulate the existing cladding which has reached the end of its useful life and to improve the thermal efficiency of the building.”

Permission to install new signage advertising the new ownership of the building is also requested in the application.

The unit was previously used for warehousing and light industrial work and formed part of an early redevelopment of the brownfield site.

The Design and Access Statement prepared by the agent reads: “The new owners of the building, Chimney Sheep Ltd, are manufacturers and distributors of eco-products that are primarily sold online.

“Currently located in Maryport over two sites this relocation will allow consolidation of premises and a further expansion of the business. Chimney Sheep currently employs 12 people. These jobs will relocate to the new premises with a planned increase in numbers over the next 3 years.”

The proposal will not mean any changes to vehicular access to the site.
