PETER Rabbit handed out Easter eggs to delighted children in Whitehaven at the weekend.

Beatrix Potter's famous bunny made an appearance at St Nicholas' Gardens in the town centre to spread joy and present youngsters with a chocolate treat.

It was organised by Whitehaven Town Council and funded with the mayor's allowance.

Claire Blaney was dressed as Peter Rabbit and offered her service for free. About 350 Easter eggs were handed out at the event.

Leftover eggs were sent to West Cumberland Hospital and presented to patients on the children's ward by Peter Rabbit.

Chris Hayes, mayor of Whitehaven, said: "It was absolutely brilliant. It really was. They were queued up outside the gate.

"People were asking how much it was, and we were saying, 'it's free - come and join us, please'. They loved it.

"My grandson had a smile on his face like a Cheshire cat. It was absolutely beautiful. From babies to big kids as well. It was good.

"It's about looking after the kids as well. Seeing the kids smiling. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it."

Graham Roberts, who represents the Harras ward on Whitehaven Town Council, was also in attendance.

He said: "It was just to brighten the children up for Easter. It was something nice for the town. The day was lovely. The children were so pleased. It was a lovely thing to do."
