A COMPELLING political clash is set to take place at the ballot box on Thursday when candidates bid for election to Cumberland Council.
Elections on May 5 will appoint councillors to a new unitary authority which will govern Cumberland: Carlisle, Allerdale and Copeland.
Successful candidates in Thursday’s election will first form a Shadow Authority, working towards a smooth transition of power from the existing councils.
On Vesting Day, April 1, 2023, the councillors you elect this week will then takeover from Cumbria County Council, Carlisle City Council and the borough councils as the single responsible authority in the area.
Perhaps one of the most compelling contests in this election is for the Stanwix Urban ward.
Paul Nedved, is standing for election as an independent, he is currently a member of Carlisle City Council and served on the executive before stepping down from the Conservative Party over the Partygate scandal
Councillor Nedved said: “Real privilege to stand for the new Cumberland Authority and to fight on local issues that affect Stanwix residents and businesses and make a difference helping restore decency and trust in local politics.”
Cllr Nedved is running against follow Stanwix councillor and former teammate, Elizabeth Mallinson.
Conservative candidate Elizabeth Mallinson said that she will campaign for a new school and infrastructure before more housing is built, she also pledged to protect Rickerby Park from overnight camping and draw up a long term plan for the area with residents.
Newcomer Brian Wernham hopes to win the seat for the Liberal Democrats.
As part of his campaign, Mr Wernham has been calling for a Stanwix Village Council, successfully urging the city to launch a consultation on the new parish council.
He said: “We’re calling for as many decisions as possible to be taken at a local and community level. We already have great parish and town councils in most areas but where there aren’t any, they need to be created.
“We want to work with these local councils and with community groups and organisations to deliver a positive and ambitious community plan for every local area.”
Paul Atkinson is standing for Labour in the Stanwix Urban ward and the party’s policies include: ensuring care and support services are high quality, promoting local prosperity, keeping Carlisle clean and ensuring communities are safe and secure.
