AN 'oil spill' in a Carlisle river has now been 'repaired and fully resolved', a leading manufacturer has now confirmed. 

The spill, affecting the waters of the River Caldew in Denton Holme, was confirmed by the Environment Agency on May 6.

Local residents were concerned about what impact the spill may have on the surrounding wildlife. The stretch is home to birds such as kingfisher, and otters have also been seen on the river.

Upon the discovery of an oily surface on the river, one resident said on social media: "Very concerned about the danger to wildlife". 

Another resident issued a warning to dogwalkers: "Dog walkers using Cummersdale Holmes, do not let your dogs swim downstream of the Pirelli factory, there has been a chemical leak and the Environment Agency and Pirelli workers are present trying to discover what it is, how it happened, as well as clear it up."  

A spokesperson from Pirelli, situated on Dalston Road, have now confirmed that the issue has now been 'resolved'.

"The source of the leak was promptly identified, repaired and is now fully resolved. 

"Civil works are being carried out for ground remediation around the vicinity of the initial spill site.

"Pirelli continue to work with the support and guidance of the Environment Agency where necessary," they said.

The Environment Agency confirmed the oil spill flowing into the River Caldew earlier this month. 

At the time of discovery, an Environment Agency spokesperson said: "The Environment Agency are aware of an oil spill to the River Caldew to the west of Carlisle.

"Our investigations are currently ongoing into this incident so we would be unable to comment further at this time in order not to prejudice our enquiries.

"Members of the public can report incidents of this nature to our 24/7 incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60," they said.
