HEARTBROKEN parents paid tribute to their 'gift from god' 11-month-old baby boy Adriel Sinish who tragically died of positional asphyxiation in an 'inadvertent and tragic accident' at their Whitehaven home.

An inquest at Cockermouth Coroners' Court heard 11-month-old baby boy Adriel died of positional asphyxia after he fell asleep cradled by his father on May 24 last year.

In statements read out in court on their behalf, parents Soniya and Joseph Sinish, Buttermere Road, Whitehaven said Adriel was a happy and healthy boy who was 'very loved' and 'very much missed'.

The court heard that Adriel's parents had moved to Whitehaven from India and were working locally.

Soniya found out she was pregnant on October 22 at 2019 while living in India and said she was delighted by the 'unexpected surprise'.

Mrs Sinish explained that Adriel meant 'gift from God' and that he was a 'very special baby' who was 'everything for us and for our family.'

Adriel was born on June 21, 2020 and was a 'normal, healthy and happy child'

At yesterday's inquest (Thursday, May 19) the court heard that Joseph called 999 at 6am on May 24, 2021, after seeing his son had stopped breathing and was unresponsive.

In his written submission, Mr Sinish told the court that Adriel would not settle in his pram on the night of Sunday May 23 after he had been fed earlier that evening and was soothing him by cradling him.

However, the court heard that Adriel was not settling and Mr Sinish sat on the sofa overnight with Adriel cradled in his arms to sooth him.

He told the court that he woke throughout the night and Adriel was breathing normally and was okay.

Mr Sinish then drifted back to sleep but woke at 6am and upon quickly checking Adriel realised he was not breathing and not responsive.

He immediately called his wife and 999 for an ambulance. He also administered emergency CPR taking advice from the NWAS call handler.

Police and paramedics arrived minutes and battled to revive the 11-month-old.

An ambulance rushed Adriel and his mother to West Cumberland Infirmary in Hensingham under police escort which arrived at 6.49am.

The emergency paediatric team at the Infirmary fought to resuscitate Adriel but he was sadly pronounced dead at 7.05am on Monday May 24.

Giving evidence in a written statement, NCIC health visitor Karen Scott told the court that Adriel 'was a healthy and well looked after baby'.

He was a normal, happy and healthy baby and that all risk assessments were carried out and everything was fine.

Advice with leaflets on the dangers of co-sleeping was also given to the parents.

Upon examination paediatric pathologist Dr Srinivas Annavarapu ruled out Sudden Infant Death Syndrome because of Accidental Asphyxia or Overlay due to co-sleeping.

Delivering a verdict of accidental death, coroner Kirsty Gomersal passed on her condolences to Adriel's parents and loved ones.

She said: "I offer my deepest and most sincere condolences to Adriel's parents. This was an inadvertent and tragic accident. My condolences to those who knew and loved Adriel."
