Former Carlisle United favourite Darren Edmondson has been unveiled as the new manager of Penrith.

The Cumbrian has agreed to join the Frenchfield Park club ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Ex-Workington Reds and Barrow manager Edmondson replaces Chris Humphrey at the Northern League Division One club.

And it continues the 50-year-old's ties with Penrith at a time he is spearheading a new sporting academy at the Newton Rigg site near the town.

Penrith were given a reprieve from relegation last season despite finishing second bottom of the division.

It came amid a reorganisation of the leagues.

Penrith said they were "delighted and excited" to welcome the experienced coach to the club.

"Darren has a wealth of experience with various clubs as a player with Carlisle United followed by successful managerial posts at Workington Reds and Barrow FC," a club statement said.

"I am sure he is looking forward to teaming up with us all at Penrith AFC and he can be assured of our support in the challenges facing him.

"There are more exciting announcements to follow in the coming weeks."

Edmondson has spent the last two years working as head of football at the Park View Academy of Sport in the north east.

He was previously academy manager at Carlisle United - the club where he made his name after coming through the ranks as a player before going on to have spells with Huddersfield Town, York City and Chester City.

One of his first games in charge will be a pre-season friendly against United at Frenchfield Park on Friday, July 1.
