TRIBUTES  have been given to a former councillor who suddenly and unexpectedly passed away.

Former Keswick Town Councillor Peter Terry lost his life just over a week ago.

A friend and colleague of his, Alan Dunn, the former Mayor of Keswick, wrote in a tribute announcing the devastating news: “Peter suffered a massive stroke just over a week ago then suffered complications with pneumonia, then another stroke which caused irreparable damage and he died with dignity on Sunday afternoon.

“He will be a huge miss to wife Judith and daughters Hannah and Jessica Terry along with sons in law and grandchildren.

“Peter recently travelled to Poland with Richard Allen taking medical supplies for Ukraine.

“I was privileged to work alongside Peter.”

Steve Harwood, the current Mayor of Keswick, also wrote: “I shed a tear today at the sad news of the loss of our friend and town council colleague, so soon after his heroic trip to Poland to deliver much needed medical supplies for the people of Ukraine.

“Peter was elected to the town council in March 2020 following the resignation of Alan Todd.

“It is true to say he ruffled a few feathers at Council meetings as he challenged established

views on issues of importance to him.

"He immediately committed himself to working with Keswick in Bloom and the council’s environmental working group.

“He was forthright in his views and intent on conveying a sense of realism in achieving climate change targets.

“It is incumbent on all of us to continue his good work.

“I am so pleased he managed to achieve his passionate aim to travel to Poland to deliver medical supplies to Ukraine.

“This together with his fundraising and procurement of the necessary supplies was entirely on his own initiative. The arduous journey, there and back by car and ferry in his much loved Citroen Berlingo van, took about a week with his friend Richard Allen as co-driver.

“I was glad to have been in the Town Centre to see him off on this amazing journey.

“He was a real gentleman and he will be sadly missed.

“His family should be extremely proud of his energy and commitment to causes that were important to him.”
