TWO artists are set to have their new work displayed at Tullie House alongside the Japanese prints that inspired them.

Artists Jonathan Harkins and Harvey Tye, of Prism Arts (the charity that looks to bridge the gap between the arts industry and people with additional learning needs), will be showcasing their exhibition Travelling Stories alongside their inspiration by Japanese printmaker, Toshi Yoshida, from May 27 until December 5.

Jonathan and Harvey were commissioned by Tullie in 2021 to create artistic responses to Yoshida works acquired from the Derbyshire Schools Library Service which closed in 2018.

Their commissions were produced in 2021, during lockdown, with the artists and the Prism team meeting via zoom meeting.

Artist Jonathan Harkins said: "I know this art project is good and will enrich both mine and Harv’s future. As I said before: Art is milk for the eyes. And honey for the soul".

Both artists have featured previously at Tullie House with their curation of the Cultures Collide project in 2019 - of which remains a part of the Tullie House permanent collection.

Their work was initially exhibited digitally as part of the wider Travelling Stories, a project being run by Buxton Museum with the help of the Esmeé Fairbairn Collections Fund to set out to find new homes for the Derbyshire Schools Library Service collection, which had been built up since the 1930s.

Artist Harvey Tye said: "I found out about new facts and cultures, finding different designs for buildings, having fun and doing my artwork. And it has given me something to focus on during lockdown."
