MAGISTRATES have jailed a 54-year-old Whitehaven woman after she breached her criminal behaviour order – by being drunk on a public street.

Cheryl Bragg has been prosecuted for similar offences in the recent past, the court heard.

Her latest brush with the law was on May 25 in Whitehaven when she was found drunk in the town “without a reasonable excuse.”

Magistrates imposed three months jail on the defendant, of Windermere Road, Whitehaven.

Explaining their reasons, magistrates said the defendant committed the offence while under a suspended sentence. She had shown a “flagrant disregard” for court orders and her offending came on top of similar previous breaches.

Her original criminal behaviour order was imposed at Workington Magistrates’ Court on January 18 and included a stipulation that she must not be found drunk in any public place.

Bragg was represented by defence lawyer John Cooper.

Just a few weeks ago, the same court heard that the defendant was found "passed out" in a garden in Whitehaven on April 27 and this followed a similar offence she had committed in Chapel Street, Whitehaven, on April 15.

During the earliker hearing, defence lawyer Anthony Wilson said there was clearly "an alcohol issue", compounded by a background of Brag having suffered from mistreatment.

“She tells me she has re-engaged with Unity [the drug and alcohol service],” said Mr Wilson during that hearing.
