Whitehaven Golf Club has made a strong commitment to promote the benefits of golf for women and girls, to get them involved in playing, and to support equality in the game.
The club has been working closely with England Golf to gain the R&A Women In Golf Chartership.
The club developed an action plan as part of their Chartership application, and has agreed a number of actions for the coming year to make the sport more accessible and attractive for women.
Lynne Gorley, one of the Women’s Section members, worked with England Golf and the club’s management team to develop the Charter application.
She has now been appointed as the Club’s Women In Golf Charter Champion to assist with the promotion of the Charter, monitor the Club’s progress against its commitments, and report back to England Golf on the Club’s achievements.

She said: "We are thrilled to have gained the Chartership, and really looking forward to sharing the benefits of golf with a wider group of women in west Cumbria. Golf is a fantastic sport that can be played throughout a person’s life.
"It is ideal for general fitness, socialising, and improving mental health, and most of all it is fun. We are working hard to show that joining our Women’s Section is a friendly, welcoming and enjoyable experience, and we really hope that we can encourage more local women to give golf a shot."
The Club’s first promotional event, 'Women on Par' will be held on Saturday 11 June. This will be a social afternoon aimed at women who are interested in taking up golf, or getting back into the game if they haven’t played for a while.

There will be clubs and equipment available to borrow, teaching from the Club’s PGA Professional, Mark Mattinson and members of the Women’s Section will be on hand to have some fun hitting shots on the range, out on the course or on the practice putting green, with the afternoon rounded off with prosecco and treats.
