THE Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has launched a consultation on its Clean Energy Strategy, this is a plan to generate green energy in Cumbria, and carbon emissions from communities. This will create up to 13,000 new green jobs.

The blueprint sets out how Cumbria will make a significant contribution to the UK’s low carbon energy future, whilst building on the current net exporter to the national grid stauts. It explains how our region was the facilities to potentially deliver up to 9GW of clean energy by 2040. This is equivalent to the average electricity consumption of around 9 million homes.

Jo Lappin, Chief Executive of Cumbria LEP, said:

“Cumbria is already a powerhouse, punching well above its weight as a net exporter of renewable power to the nation. This strategy seeks to build on those green foundations, significantly expanding our clean energy infrastructure to create up to 13,000 new jobs and sustainable economic growth for our communities.

Thomas Shaw, who has been on the CLEP Futures Forum since 2020, and the CLEP Clean Energy Sector Panel since 2022 said:

"The strategy is a bold new vision to make Cumbrian the place to live, work, and enjoy oneself- where industry and innovation meets the picturesque scenery of the Lake District."

"The strategy supports the delivery of this vision while supporting the delivery of a net zero Cumbria."

There is a Clean Energy Strategy consultation workshop on Monday June 20 for you to have your say.

Consultation on the strategy is open until Wednesday 22 June 2022, with people encouraged to submit comments on the draft by:

  • Completing an online survey
  • A videoconference consultation workshop for private, public, voluntary, community and social enterprise representatives is also being held on Monday 20 June, with registration now open.
