A COUNCILLOR has welcomed new funding to spruce up a historic site.
Brampton councillor and Carlisle mayor Mike Mitchelson said he was pleased to reveal that the funding bid for Brampton Mote renovations was successful.
He said the Brampton Mote, also known as Brampton Castle, requires refurbishments to make it more accessible, such as better seating.
The mote, or motte, was historically an earth and timber motte-and-bailey building, built on top of a ridge of high ground which gave it clear views towards the Scottish border.
The site's historical significance is something that Mitchelson highlighted as one of the major reasons why refurbishments are necessary, as it attracts people from the town frequently, and serves as a popular place to view the town.
He said also that some of the shrubberies should be removed to open up access to the view as a way to tidy up the site, some drainage work should be carried out, and interpretation boards should be installed.
He spoke about this in April, and has this month told of a successful bid that resulted in £35,000 obtained.
He said: “That will now see improvements for the Mote which means work can be done and more people will be encouraged to use it.
“There will be seating and notice boards as well.”
The Cumbria County Council funding will be given to Brampton Parish Council to arrange the work.
