An event that will welcome refugees into the area will kick off this weekend.
Called ‘Welcome to Your City’, it will be the second event of its kind that Tribe hosted for Refugee Week in June.
Over 150 refugees from across the globe who have fled war and persecution are now living in Carlisle.
Last month they came together with members of the public to enjoy food, entertainment, sports, game, and information about life in Carlisle.
Adrienne Gill, a development officer at Carlisle One World Centre said: “Carlisle City of Sanctuary and Carlisle Refugee Action Group members were delighted with the success of the first Welcome to Your City day last month.
“It was really a great experience to work with members of Tribe and Carlisle City Council on this very inclusive event that set the bar high for welcoming our new friends from all over the world who have come to seek sanctuary here.”
The next event will be taking place on Sunday, July 17, from 12:00 – 4:00 pm.
Everyone is welcome to attend in solidarity with those seeking refuge in Carlisle, and to enjoy the celebrations, but please note that only refugees and those seeking sanctuary are entitled to the free amenities.
It is organised by Carlisle City of Sanctuary, Carlisle Refugee Action Group, Carlisle One World Centre and Carlisle City Council with additional funding from Cumbria County Council and Cumbria Community Foundation.
Emmanuel Lorenzana, site manager at Tribe Carlisle, a five-year project funded by Carlisle City Council, said: “We’re thrilled to be involved with such a special and inspiring project, as are all of our tenants who catered for the refugees last month and will be doing so again this July.
“We’ve even seen some familiar faces back as Tribe since the last event, and are pleased that the community we are fighting to support feel so welcome at Tribe Carlisle.”
