A NEW fast food chain is set to open in Penrith if plans are approved by Eden District Council.

Tim Hortons Ltd. have submitted an application to convert the former KFC site in Penrith into a drive thru restaurant for the popular Canadian chain.

Tim Hortons serves coffee, doughnuts, and other fast food items and is Canada's largest quick-service restaurant chain, with 4,949 restaurants in 15 countries as of March 2, 2022.

The Penrith site will be the first restaurant for the chain in Cumbria, after a failed attempt to establish one south of the county in Barrow last year.

The applications list alterations to building and elevations to include re-cladding and new exterior signage, including changes to the external menu boards.

The chain is relatively new to the UK, but has been expanding in recent years.

In supporting documents the applicant said: "The majority of changes required are internal and do not require planning permission.

"However, a few alterations to the exterior are required to accommodate Tim Hortons and therefore the opportunity is also being taken to upgrade the elevational treatment to modernise its appearance."

The Penrith KFC branch closed its doors indefinitely in May as the restaurant's lease had ended.

At the time, a spokesperson from KFC said: "It’s been a great run, but all good things must come to an end and we’re saying goodbye to Penrith."
