AS prices of fuel are very gradually beginning to fall, we have compared the price of fuel in north and west Cumbria compared to the rest of the north to see who is getting the better deal.

New fuel price data from the AA has suggested the cost of filling up a car is set to be £10 cheaper within a fortnight as spiralling fuel costs begin to settle.

The data suggests the price of petrol had dropped by 2.8p a litre from record highs, with drivers benefitting from an average price of £1.50 off the price of a tank.

Diesel prices have also started to fall with the fuel being more than 2p cheaper than at the start of the month.

Meanwhile, wholesale petrol that had peaked above £1 a litre on 1 June fell to below 80p a litre for much of last week.

This indicates that as much as 20p could fall from record highs at the pump within the next two weeks.

However, there are warnings that forecourts may not pass on the savings to drivers.

Luke Bosdet, AA’s fuel price spokesperson, commented on the price changes and how they would impact drivers.

He added: “Wholesale petrol’s trajectory, if sustained, would lead to savings of a tenner off a tank from the record highs – providing the fuel trade is prepared to pass them on. 

“So far this morning, even with oil rebounding, wholesale petrol remains below 80.5p a litre.

In Carlisle, the best prices can be found at Morrisons which is currently at 177.7p for petrol and 188.7p for diesel. In Newcastle, one of the best prices for fuel is found at the Costco Garage in Gateshead which is priced at 178.7p for petrol and 198.7p for diesel.

In Whitehaven, the best prices can be found at the Jet Garage in Egremont which is currently at 174.9p for petrol and diesel at 188.9p. In Barrow-In-Furness, the best prices are at Morrisons which is set at 185.7p for petrol and 195.7p for diesel.

In Workington, the best prices can be found at Morrisons which is currently at 177.p for petrol and diesel at 189.7p. In North Yorkshire, the best prices are at Morrisons also which is set at 184.9p for petrol and 192.9p for diesel.

In Penrith, the best prices can be found at Morrisons which is currently at 177.9p for petrol and 189.9p for diesel. In Newcastle, one of the best prices for fuel is found at the Costco Garage in Oldham which is priced at 173.9p for petrol and 182.7p for diesel.

These figures show the stark difference in prices across the north of the country. The same stores are showing difference of up to 10p in the different areas. Diesel especially alters between areas.

Whilst prices show Cumbria prices are not always cheaper, cities and most densley populated areas, on the most are usually showing higher prices.
