Cumbria's Lauren Smith will bring home two silver medals from the Commonwealth Games.

The Cumbrian had been going for gold in the finals of the badminton mixed doubles and women's doubles.

But the 30-year-old had to settle for runner-up status in both.

Smith took her career tally of Commonwealth medals to seven but gold eluded her in today's finals in Birmingham.

First, Smith and Marcus Ellis were beaten by Singapore's Terry Hee and Jessica Tan in the mixed doubles.

And the Cumbrian and Chloe Birch were then defeated by Malaysian duo Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan in the women's doubles.

This morning's mixed doubles saw Smith and Ellis claim England's first badminton medals of the games.

They fought hard in the 8am final but went down 21-16, 21-15 after an impressive showing from Hee and Tan in Birmingham.

It was a second consecutive Commonwealth mixed doubles silver for Smith and Ellis after their runner-up finish in 2018.

Carlisle-born Smith and Birch then fell to an inspired showing from Tan and Muralitharan in the women's doubles final.

The Malaysians won 21-5, 21-8 to take the title.

Speaking after the game, Smith said: "In the moment after the game you think, 'what if'.

"A gold would have been an incredible reflection of what an amazing Games Team England have had.

"But we've fought hard to get here. This was a hard-earned medal. We were outclassed in the final but should hold our heads up high."

Smith joins fellow Cumbrians Simon Lawson, Nick Miller and Fiona Crackles in winning medals in Birmingham.
