The Guide Dogs charity is looking for people across Cumbria to become ‘puppy raisers’ for the very first time.

Guide Dogs’ puppy raisers are volunteers who care for the pups from when they’re 8-weeks old until when they’re around 14 months old.

The volunteers give the puppy basic training and get it used to lots of different sounds, smells and environments such as cafes, restaurants and shops, ensuring it is ready to start its formal training as a guide dog.

Guide Dogs’ staff will be on hand throughout to help through the training and all they ask is for a safe home and dedicated volunteers to care for the puppies.

‘‘Being a Puppy Raiser is such a rewarding role and you really will be making a huge impact in getting our dogs well on their way to becoming life-changers’’ Hannah Laidlaw, the Volunteering Coordinator for the North-West at Guide Dogs, said.

‘It’s a challenging role, but it’s so much fun. You have a special bond together, but that puppy will go on to change someone’s life.’’

The charity is particularly looking for people around Carlisle, Penrith and Kendal, but anyone is welcome to register their interest by visiting the Guide Dogs website.
