CUMBRIA is a lovely place to live, with an abundance of green spaces, lakes and world-famous landmarks.
However, Cumbria is not always the picturesque Lake District.
A look at police crime maps, show that some of Cumbria's neighbourhoods have problems with violence and sexual offences - now the most regular of crimes to be committed across the county, according to official police.uk statistics.
Using the police maps, the News and Star have outlined which areas have seen the largest number of reported crimes in the most recent data - and which area has seen the largest proportion of reported incidents of the current most common crime, violence and sexual offences.
Carlisle
In Carlisle, the crime most heavily reported in June 2022, was violence and sexual offences, with a total of 72 seperate reports. The largest proportion of these reports were in reference to incidents on or near a parking area or in pubs/clubs, with 47 reports made on the stretch of road from Blackfrairs street, past English Street to Botchergate.
Botchergate had the highest number of reported crime overall, with 34 reports made in June 2022:
- 2 reports of 'other theft'
- 2 report of criminal damage and arson
- 26 report of violence and sexual offences
- 4 report of 'all other crime'
Workington
In Workington, the crime most heavily reported in June 2022 was violence and sexual offences, with a total of 145 separate reports. The largest proportion of these reports were in reference to incidents on or near public transport or pubs/clubs, with 7 reports made on or near the train station and others distributed near popular drinking spots.
However, Jane Street had the highest number of reported crime overall, with 36 reports made in June 2022 on or near here:
- 4 reports of anti-social behaviour
- 17 reports of shoplifting
- 11 reports of 'all other crime'
- 4 reports of burglary
Whitehaven
In Whitehaven, the crime most heavily reported in June 2022, was violence and sexual offences, with a total of 83 separate reports. The largest proportion of these reports were in reference to incidents on or near the cross section of Scotch Street and Duke Street.
This cross section, located near where the since shutdown restaurant, The Glasshouse is located, had the highest number of reported crime overall, with 42 reports made in June 2022:
- 6 reports of criminal damage and arson
- 7 reports of antisocial behaviour
- 19 reports of violence and sexual offences
- 10 report of 'all other crime'
Maryport
In Maryport, the crime most heavily reported in June 2022, was violence and sexual offences, with a total of 28 separate reports. The largest proportion of these reports were in reference to incidents on or near the Senhouse Street.
However, on or near Catherine Street had the highest number of reported crime overall, with 25 reports made in June 2022:
- 11 reports of violence and sexual offences
- 8 reports of criminal damage and arson
- 3 reports of burlgary
- 3 reports of other crime
Aspatria
In Aspatria, the crime most heavily reported in June 2022, was violence and sexual offences, with a total of 27 separate reports. The largest proportion of these reports were in reference to incidents on or near North View.
However, the area around the A596 and Station Road had the highest number of reported crime overall, with 17 reports made in June 2022:
- 3 reports of anti-social behaviour
- 3 reports of drugs
- 3 reports of criminal damage and arson
- 8 reports for 'all other crimes'
Cockermouth
In Cockermouth, whose policing boundaries cover a larger area than others, the crime most heavily reported in June 2022, was violence and sexual offences, with a total of 37 separate reports. The largest proportion of these reports were in reference to incidents on or near Highfield Sports Ground.
This area also has the highest number of reported crime overall, both recording 25 reports made in June 2022:
- 13 reports of violence and sexual offences
- 4 reports of 'other theft'
- 5 reports of public order
- 3 reports of 'all other crime'
However, despite what any crime figures portray on where we live, Cumbria is in the top 50 per cent of counties for safety according to crimerate.co.uk. In 2015, the CA28 postcode was rated one of the safest postcodes in the country and places like Cockermouth have appeared in lists for the safest towns in Cumbria.
Rising crime rates can be explained by the decrease of funding in certain areas, as well as numerous other factors. However, the Lake District and Cumbria still remains a beautiful place to live.
