LIZ Truss has been announced as the new leader of the Conservative Party and the nation's new Prime Minister - and gave Carlisle a mention in her acceptance speech.

In her speech, she mentioned her 'friend' Boris Johnson and spoke about his time in office, saying: "Boris, you got Brexit done, you crushed Jeremy Corbyn, you rolled out the vaccine, you stood up to Vladimir Putin.

"You were admired from Kyiv to Carlisle."

There was a seemingly awkward pause after the remark, with applause then following afterwards.

Alastair Campbell tweeted about the speech.

"There is a very awkward pause before the audience realise they are supposed to applaud," added ITV's Paul Brand.

On social media, others queried why she stopped short of including Scotland in her praise for the outgoing PM.

The SNP MP Joanna Cherry said: "She praises her predecessor... but says admiration for him stops at Carlisle. Well she’s got that right!"
