Readers were hardly impressed by the new Prime Minister’s nod to our county’s city that she made in a recent speech.

In her acceptance speech, she mentioned her 'friend' Boris Johnson and spoke about his time in office, saying: "Boris, you got Brexit done, you crushed Jeremy Corbyn, you rolled out the vaccine, you stood up to Vladimir Putin.

"You were admired from Kyiv to Carlisle."

There was a seemingly awkward pause after the remark, with applause then following afterwards.

The SNP MP Joanna Cherry said: "She praises her predecessor... but says admiration for him stops at Carlisle.

“Well, she’s got that right!"

It didn’t exactly ignite much support from our readers, either.

Ian Green said: “It acknowledges the hatred felt for Johnson in Scotland, but by making us the northern limit of his popularity it does rather assume that the people of Carlisle respect liars.”

Hannah Coates said: “I distinctly remember Boris' article about his trip to Carlisle in 2005 where he certainly didn't admire the place.

“We don't forget these things!”

Stephen Thompson jibed: “Most of the folk there probably didn’t even know where Carlisle is!”

Recalling another awkward speech the PM made, Michael Renney said: “Not improved then from her pork markets speech.”
