KING Charles III was proclaimed as the new monarch at the City of Carlisle's Proclamation ceremony today (September 11).
Civic dignitaries, members of the armed forces and mass crowds turned out to the King's proclamation in front of Carlisle's Old Town Hall in the afternoon.
The proclamation from Carlisle's Mayor came after a procession flowed from Cumbria County Council's County proclamation, which was held in front of The Courts on English Street.
Speaking prior to the event, Mayor Mike Mitchelson said: "It's a huge honour to take part in such a historic occasion in the city. It's obviously a difficult emotional time as people are still mourning The Queen's death. But at the same time, the Monarch has to continue and we have to celebrate the accession of the new King.
"Obviously thoughts are with the royal family on this occasion, it must be very difficult for them as a family to come to terms with the Queen's death and at the same time have to continue the tradition involved in the monarchy," he said.
The Lord Lieutenant, Claire Hensman, opened proceedings with heartfelt words to the Royal Family.
Subsequently, The Proclamation was then read by the Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Mike Mitchelson.
He addressed the crowd: "Whereas it has pleased Almighty God to call to His Mercy our late Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth II of blessed and glorious memory, by whose decease the crown of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is solely and rightfully come to The Price Charles Philip Arthur George. We, therefore, the Lords Spiritual and Temporal of this Realm and Members of the House of Commons, together with other members of Her late Majesty's Privy Council and representatives of the Realms and territories, Aldermen, citizens of London, and others do now hereby with one voice and consent of tongue and heart publish and proclaim that The Price Charles Philip Arthur George is now, by the death of our late Sovereign of happy memory, become our only lawful and rightful liege Lord Charles the third.
"By the grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of his other realms and territories, King, head of commonwealth, defender of the faith, to whom we do acknowledge all faith and obedience with humble affection; beseeching God by whom Kings and Queens do reign to bless his Majesty with long and happy years to reign over us. Given at St James' Palace, this tenth day of September in the year of Our Lord 2022.
"God save the King," he read.
The large crowd that had gathered joined the dignitaries in a verse of the national anthem.
All proclamations were then followed by a service at Carlisle Cathedral.
